At present the capacity to absorb, develop and apply modern industrial biotechnology in Ethiopia is very limited and needs to be strengthened. The existing industrial biotechnology related training, research and development activities in the country are limited both in scope and number. Modern industrial biotechnology offers opportunities to improve product quality, nutritional content, and economic benefits.Modern industrial biotechnology offers opportunities to improve product quality, nutritional content, and economic benefits. The applications of industrial biotechnology are so broad, and the advantages so compelling, that virtually every industry is using this technology.Developments are underway in areas as diverse as pharmaceuticals, textiles, chemicals, household products, bioenergy, food processing and pulp and pepper.
Objectives of the program
- To train professionals in the field o fIndustrial and Environmental Biotechnology , to cope with the emerging industrial need of the nation including biotechnology, green process engineering and energy conversion, minimize the loss of agricultural products, bio resources and natural resources.
- To conduct demand driven and problem solving research in Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology,.
- To provide industry driven services in different Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology areas.
- To render professional and technical consultancy/advice on matters pertaining to Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology
- To produce highly skilled professionals with the knowledge and attitude necessary for Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology research.
- To generate technologies through demand driven and problem solving research in the areas of Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology.
- To disseminate generated/adopted technologies to potential users.
- To undertake collaborative researches with various national/regional and international institutions/non-governmental organizations.

Admission criteria
- MSc degree or equivalent in related fields which is to be decided by FGC from a recognized institution. An applicant with MSc in non-chemical engineering fields, but very close background to the proposed specialization may have to attend some graduate courses recommended by the advisory committee.
- PhD by research candidates should demonstrate a strong academic and research background (i.e. at least 2 publications) including having the ability to independently pursue the research of interest in a scientific manner.
- The faculty may give a written qualifying examination and an obligatory interview in consultation with the advisors.
- Candidates are expected to submit two recommendation letters on a statement of interest/motivation, and a research concept note for the PhD program.
- Candidates must also meet the general application and graduation admission policy of BiT-BDU.
