Message from the Director

As it is noted in many governmental and organizational documents, education is the key for sustainable development. It is the means to alleviate poverty and inequality. Effective functioning of various economic and social sectors of a nation is dependent on the manpower produced by the education system. If the education system is not going well and fails to contribute capable working force for the other sectors, a nation’s development cannot be realized. Cognizant of this, our country has designed and started to implement a new education and training policy since 1994. Various strategic documents are also prepared to assist proper implementation of the policy (such as Education Sector Development Program (ESDP) documents). However, it is not sufficient for a nation to prepare appealing policies and strategies to guide the education system. The designing of such policies and strategies cannot guarantee success unless support is rendered from professionals in terms of generating empirical evidences on best practices and providing consultancy and expert advice for practitioners. Thus, we professionals in the field of education, have the responsibility to closely follow the education system of our country and extend our support in whatever form we can. We have to work hard to make our educational practices in general and school teaching and learning practices in particular evidence based. In a nation where the education system is not supported by continuous researching and monitoring by professionals, it is not possible to make the education relevant and to bring about desired socio-economic changes. With this respect, higher education institutions have the responsibility to take the leading role. It is with this understanding that Bahir Dar University has established the Institute of Pedagogical and Educational Research (IPER) in May 2013. IPER has the aims of making educational practices research based so as to close the gap between research and practice and to subsequently bring about quality education and quality learning. As a young research institute IPER calls for the support and collaboration of experienced researchers, locally and abroad, who are interested to work on research in the field of education.
