H.E. Ambassador Ervin Massinga Visits Bahir Dar University (BDU): High-Level Dialogue Strengthens Strategic Partnership Between BDU and the United States

Bahir Dar University had the distinct honor of hosting H.E. Ervin Massinga, U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, and his delegation for a high-level and forward-looking strategic dialogue with the University’s senior leadership, led by its President, Dr. Mengesha Ayene.

The engagement opened with a comprehensive discussion centered on the University’s ongoing transition toward institutional autonomy, an ambitious reform agenda aimed at positioning Bahir Dar University as a research-intensive and globally competitive institution. In this regard, both sides acknowledged the continued support of the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia and underscored the importance of sustained collaboration in strengthening institutional capacity.

Key pillars underpinning the University’s autonomy journey, internationalization, endowment development, and alumni engagement, were explored in depth. The leadership highlighted ongoing efforts to expand global partnerships, diversify funding streams, and harness the growing network of alumni as a strategic resource for institutional transformation.

The discussion further reflected the University’s broader societal role, particularly its active engagement in peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction efforts in the East African region. The Ambassador and his delegation expressed appreciation for the University’s commitment to advancing dialogue, resilience, and regional stability through research, community outreach, and policy engagement.

In addition, the meeting highlighted Bahir Dar University’s multifaceted contributions to national development through impactful work in education, health, science, and innovation. Special emphasis was placed on the University’s growing involvement in global health initiatives, demonstrating its capacity to contribute to international scientific collaboration and knowledge production.

Both parties also exchanged views on expanding academic exchange programs, research collaborations, funding opportunities, and problem-solving research initiatives that address real-world challenges. The dialogue concluded with a shared commitment to reinvigorating and scaling up the longstanding partnership between Bahir Dar University and U.S. institutions for mutual benefit and sustainable impact.
