Bahir Dar University’s Directorate of Multicultural Affairs, in Collaboration with CARE Ethiopia, Conducts Awareness Program on Menstrual Hygiene Management

The Directorate of Multi-sectoral Affairs of Bahir Dar University, in collaboration with CARE Ethiopia, conducted an awareness-raising program on menstrual hygiene management and the proper use of sanitary products for in the presence of relevant/respective university leaders, faculty members, staff, and students. Opening the program, Dr. Mulugojam Wondifraw, Chief Executive Director of the Directorate of Multicultural Affairs, emphasized that menstrual health and hygiene are not merely personal health issues but also critical factors influencing women’s educational attainment and workplace participation. She noted that the University is working to ensure the availability of clean sanitation facilities, adequate water supply, and other essential hygiene resources. Dr. Mulugojam also stressed the importance of collective efforts to eliminate misconceptions surrounding menstruation and to promote greater awareness within the community. During the event, CARE Ethiopia Project Coordinator Mr. Chalew Tesfaye delivered a comprehensive presentation on reproductive health, the menstrual cycle, proper sanitary pad usage, and personal hygiene practices. He highlighted the need for accessible facilities and services that enable female students and staff members to obtain sanitary products conveniently and with dignity. Mr. Chalew further explained that CARE Ethiopia is implementing awareness-raising initiatives among various segments of society to address negative perceptions and reduce the stigma associated with menstruation. He noted that similar interventions carried out in schools across Bahir Dar City have produced encouraging results. Participants underscored that menstrual health and hygiene are shared social responsibilities and called for the continuation of similar awareness programs in the future.
