Faulty Dean, Ayale Triku (PhD)

As per Article 39 of the Senate Legislation (May 2019), the powers and responsibilities of deans include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Formulating the AU's strategic and annual plans and submitting the plan for the Academic Vice President and Research and Community Service for approval;
  • Communicating and inculcating the AU's strategy, vision, mission, and objectives to AU members, and internal and external stakeholders;
  • Directs t-learning, research, community service, technology transfer, quality enhancement, and other issues in the AU.
  • Developing, together with the AU vice Deans/vice Directors and Academic Council, core process performance standards, procedures, and guidelines;
  • Oversee the proper functioning of the academic unit-level administrative bodies (registrar, finance, human resources, general services, procurement, and others);
  • Implementing continuous quality management and process improvement initiatives;
  • Ensuring customer and stakeholder satisfaction with the AU's  core processes and programs;
  • Developing better work systems, environments, and incentive systems so as to improve the motivation of staff, efficiency, and effectiveness; Establishing and maintaining bilateral and multilateral partnerships with international and local bodies;
  • Representing and advocating for his AU in internal and external affairs and in external intellectual and social affairs and events; attending and speaking on behalf of his AU at the annual process and university meeting
  • Ensuring the provision of resources, facilities, training, and education needed for the AU’s staff; ensuring that the budget for scholarship-related costs, such as airfare, is allocated in their annual plans.
  • Allocating budget for RCS activities and following up on their proper implementation and utilization.
  • Ensuring the delivery of adequate, continuous, and relevant staff development, training, and education programs in collaboration with international partners, university leadership, and others;
  • Authorizing temporary degrees issued by the AU and original degrees, together with the President;
  • Creating, improving, and maintaining core processes in academic, research, community services, and technology transfer; Developing appropriate staff development programs in line with the target performance goals of the AU's  core processes;

Academic Vice Dean, Mesfin Anteneh (PhD)

As per Article 81  of the Senate Legislation(May 2019), academic staff shall have the following duties and responsibilities.

  • Academic staff shall be required to be a scholar with full devotion to the advancement of the frontiers of knowledge in accordance with the best traditions developed by great scholarly circles the world over.
  • Every academic staff member shall carry out his functions in the best interest of the university and that of the country, having due regard to his profession.
  •  Every academic staff member shall teach courses in his area of specialization, following established university procedures to ensure the course material is delivered appropriately.
  •  Every academic staff member shall endeavor to stay abreast of the latest thinking in his area of specialization and shall periodically update his teaching material within the resources available.
  • Every academic staff member shall encourage, guide, and permit students to freely and rationally question and examine issues and various lines of thought in the course of their study;
  • Every academic staff member shall inform the course chair or department head or vice dean, or Dean, well in advance if and when he cannot be available for teaching due to his involvement in recognized or relevant fieldwork, seminar, workshop, etc.
  •  Every academic staff member shall conduct classes regularly and never miss classes except for force majeure reasons, which are immediately communicated to the nearest supervisor or head or Dean of his AU;
  • Every academic staff member shall make up classes for all the classes he missed due to his
    involvement in fieldwork, a seminar, a workshop, or any other activity recognized by his academic unit. However, such make-up classes should not exceed 25% of the course unless approved by AVP.
  • No academic staff member shall hand over the course that he has been assigned to teach to any other individual for any length of time without the approval of the course chair.

Vice Dean for Postgraduate, Research and Community Services, Tadie Degie (PhD)

As per Article 41 of the Senate legislation (May 2019), the graduate, research, and community services vice dean shall have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Plan (short-term, long-term); follow up on the implementation, and report the graduate program activities
  • Prepare standards, frameworks, guidelines, and strategies for enhancing PG programs.
  • Follow up on the students' progress from admission to graduation
  • Initiate and monitor the development of new programs and review of existing postgraduate programs and curricula based on needs and national priorities.
  • Prepares capacity-building programs for postgraduate students and staff.
  • Promote and work on the internationalization of programs
  • Follow up on graduate students' progress report
  • Ensuring the relevance of postgraduate students' research to the thematic areas of the universities
  • Lead weekly research seminars and make sure active participation of graduate students
  • Lead annual and other related research seminars and conferences, and ensure the active participation of
    graduate students and staff
  • Announce research calls, assign evaluators, and award research grants by giving due priorities to researchers who incorporate graduate students.
  • Provide support and follow up for research projects and report the performance to the respective offices.
  •   Initiate research projects and grant writing
  • Plan, coordinate, and monitor the community services and technology transfer activities, and report the performance accordingly.
  •  Perform other activities assigned by the dean.
