Department of Industrial Chemistry

Department of industrial chemistry is among the pioneer departments of Bahir Dar University. It is the channel between bench scale Chemistry and industrial scale Chemical Engineering. It requires a broad understanding of both Chemistry and Chemical Engineering concepts. Industrial Chemists are applied scientists, and engaged in solving problems of research, responsible for successful operations in the Chemical Industry. It establishes knowledge linkages in engineering, chemical processing, economics and industrial management.

Industrial Chemistry also helps to study physical and chemical processes while the transformation of raw materials into products takes place. Industrial chemistry skills are also used to study the economic feasibility for mass production of new products. Generally, the goal of the programme is to produce graduates who are well-grounded in Chemistry and Chemical engineering skills to meet the need of industry, acadamia and society.

An industrial Chemist designs, runs, troubleshoots and improves the processes of chemical and material production on an industrial scale. Career opportunities exist for graduates of the program  in various government and nongovernment organizations such as research and development institutes, production, biotechnology, quality control, and different industries like pharmaceutical, processing, fertilizer production, plastics, pulp and paper, tanning, oil and petroleum, textile, dyes and paints, cosmetics, cement, glass, water purification, and wastewater purification engineering.

Objective

  • To provide graduates who can be self-employed or employable in all chemical science and engineering, Manufacturing, Administration in industrial concerns.
  • To provide graduates of ethically sound and practical-oriented professionals that would engage on research and innovations with practical solutions to the emerging challenges of chemical and related industries in the country.
  • To practice Industrial Chemistry as a profession, lead and work in teams withØ
integrity to establish quality research environment for the improvements of industry in the country.
  •  Finally, to apply the integrated field Industrial Chemistry and allied knowledge for problem solving, management of industrial processes, innovation, economic development and for improvement of quality of life and environment.

Vision

The Department looking forward to become a pioneering place of learning and research.

Mission

At the end of the program, the graduates will:

  • Have a broad understanding of applied chemistry and chemical engineering.
  •  Be able to operate and manage industrial equipment, processes and plants.
  • Have the potential to pursue careers in academia, research and consultancy.
  • Have skills to enable them understand, develop and modify industrial technologies and hence promote industrial development.
