College of Science Basic Information

The College of Science at Bahir Dar University, originally a part of the former Faculty of Education, became an independent college in 2008 following the university’s restructuring and the increased focus on the Science and Technology sectors. Today, the college offers high-quality education across seven programs: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Industrial Chemistry, Statistics, and Data Science at the Undergraduate, Master’s, and Doctorate levels.

Currently, the college runs 11 MSc programs in 29 specializations within Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Industrial Chemistry and Statistics, as well as 9 PhD program in 22 specializations. With a total of 1151 active students, the College of Science is one of the largest at the university. This includes 659 undergraduate students, 50 MSc students, and 91 PhD candidates in regular and 189 undergraduate students and 162 MSc students in the summer program.

The college also boasts a strong academic staff profile, with 174 full-time staff members including laboratory technical assistants. This includes 11 professors, 44 associate professors, 47 assistant professors and 51 lecturers, and 21 laboratory technical assistants. Furthermore, 29 instructors are currently on study leave, with 18 pursuing PhD degrees, 2 enrolled in MSc programs, and 9 in postdoc academic pursuits. In addition, 3 technical assistants are currently pursuing PhD degrees, and 3 others are enrolled in MSc programs. These numbers demonstrate that the college has already surpassed the national GTP target for academic staff composition.

Our faculty members are actively engaged in research and community service, with 17 ongoing internal mega research projects, 13 external projects, 1 young research project and 1 female research project in numerous research groups focused on various thematic areas. Furthermore, there are more than 20 community service and 1 technology transfer projects are underway at college of science. The college is home to the Washera Geospace and Radar Science Laboratory and is looking to establish additional multidisciplinary research centers, further solidifying its commitment to innovation and excellence in research.
