Background
Bahir Dar University has a number of leading programs that have significant benefits to the country as a whole. Earth science /geology program has been established in Bahir Dar University since 2010. The program when established in this university has an intention to produce competent graduates that can solve many geologic problems. To ensure academic excellence and meet educational demands of the society, the university has already started implementing vision 2025 to become one of the top 10 best universities in Africa. In order to fulfill customer satisfaction, stay competitive and cope up with the dynamic world, Bahir Dar University is currently practicing autonomous academic governance and management system including opening competitive programmes, schools and institutes that are demanded by the society. Geology is one of the most demanded disciplines in Ethiopia due to much significant application of geological science in the current development activities. There is a high need of Earth Science/Geology graduates and professionals in the market at this time and even in the future because of involvements of professionals in various development sectors. Geologists follow paths of exploration and discovery in quest of solutions to some of society's most challenging problems. Some of them are mentioned here below.
- Finding adequate supplies of natural resources such as petroleum, natural gas, oil, geothermal energy and Minerals
- In the exploration , exploitation and management of surface and ground- water resources
- In the area of civil engineering work such as site investigations, material selection and hazard evaluation for buildings, dams, road, railway, and tunnel, etc
- Developing natural resources in ways that safeguard the environment.
- Reducing human suffering and property loss from natural hazards, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, landslides, etc
- Determining geological controls on natural environments and habitats and predicting the impact of human activities on them.
- Defining the balance between society's demand for natural resources and the need to sustain healthy ecosystems. and
- Understanding global climate patterns.
The work of most geoscientists is more "down to Earth." The Earth is an outdoor laboratory filled with opportunities to observe Earth processes in action. By applying their knowledge of forces and factors that shape the Earth, geoscientists seek to reconstruct the past and anticipate the future
