BiT-BDU and Agelgil Eco-Packaging Collaboratively Organize Training for Engineering Students [November 30, 2024 Bahir Dar, ISC/BiT] *************************************** Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University (BiT-BDU), through its BiTec-incubated startup Agelgil Eco-Packaging, organized a training for engineering students. The training, part of the HEPSSA 2024 Project and funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering, aims to enhance engineering education in Sub-Saharan Africa by strengthening research and innovation pipelines. In his opening speech, Dr. Amare Kassaw, Director of BiTec, welcomed participants and thanked the organizers for their efforts. He highlighted the significance of developing an entrepreneurial mindset and emphasized the core themes of the training: product development, innovation, and startup creation. He also encouraged students to actively participate and use the knowledge gained to transform their ideas into successful startups. Trainers covered a range of key topics during the session, including research methodology, design thinking, product development, and corporate entrepreneurship. They also provided guidance on effective communication for engineers and strategies for fostering an innovative culture. BiT-BDU Student Success Centers Organize Commencement Program for Students [November 23, 2024 Bahir Dar, ISC/BiT] *************************************** Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University (BiT-BDU) organized an informational session through its Student Success Centers, English Language Improvement Center (ELIC), Career Development Center (CDC) and Business Incubation and Techno Entrepreneurship Center (BiTec). The session aimed to provide students with a clear understanding of the services and objectives of the Student Success Centers at BiT-BDU. Dr. Amare Tesfie, Director of the Academic Quality Assurance and Enhancement Office, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the role of the centers in improving students' communication skills, career readiness, and innovation. He noted that the centers efforts are crucial for enhancing students' competitiveness in the international job market. Dr. Sisay Ayalew, Coordinator of ELIC, presented the center's work in enhancing English language skills for undergraduate and postgraduate students, instructors, and administrative staff. He underscores the importance of effective communication in today’s global job market and encourages students to actively participate in the center’s programs. Mr. Henok Gashaw, Coordinator of CDC, outlined the center’s services, which include career counseling, soft skills training, resume writing, and digital literacy. He urged students to take advantage of these offerings to unlock their potential and excel in the workforce. Following that, Mr. Fasil Tariku, Coordinator of BiTec, highlighted the center’s focus on mentorship, skill development, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer. BiT-BDU Hosts 6th ICT for Development in Africa (ICT4DA-2024) Conference [November 18, 2024 Bahir Dar, ISC/BiT] ***************************************** Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University (BiT-BDU), has commenced 6th International Conference on ICT for Development for Africa (ICT4DA-2024). The conference aims to brings together researchers, engineers, developers, and industry practitioners to explore the role of digital innovation in driving sustainable and inclusive economic growth across the African continent. Dr. Mengesha Ayene, President of BDU, in his opening remarks, emphasized the significance of the ICT4DA conference for Ethiopia's development and that of the African continent. He highlighted BiT-BDU's ABET accreditation for its engineering programs, noting that it enhances the global credibility of BiT's curricula and equips graduates with the skills needed to compete internationally. He also stated that conferences like ICT4DA are crucial for addressing Africa's challenges and supporting its development. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of such events in helping Ethiopia and Africa remain competitive in a digital future. Dr. Mitiku Damitie, Acting Scientific Director of BiT, welcomed participants and emphasized the conference's key role in fostering collaboration and innovation to address Africa's critical challenges through ICT. He noted that the ICT4DA conference has become a major platform for showcasing innovations and facilitating discussions on how digital technologies can tackle regional issues. He also highlighted that between 2019 and 2023, over 220 research papers affiliated with BiT were published in Scopus-indexed journals, reinforcing the institute's reputation as a leading center for impactful research and knowledge exchange. Dr. Esubalew Alemneh, Conference General Chair, provided an outline of the conference program, explaining it as a platform for collaboration among researchers, ICT professionals, and both government and non-governmental organizations. He also highlighted the success of the previous five ICT4DA conferences held over the past seven years, with 159 conference and workshop papers published at the event. BiT-BDU Hosts SWAT+gwflow Training Workshop for Enhanced Water Resource Management [November 13, 2024 Bahir Dar, ISC/BiT] ************************************* Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University (BiT-BDU), hosted a three-day training workshop on SWAT+gwflow, an open-source hydrological model aimed at advancing water resource management. The workshop, part of the International Training Program (ITP), was organized by Bahir Dar University in collaboration with the University of Ghent (UGent) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). The training focused on developing skills in geohydrological modeling using SWAT+gwflow and included 20 professionals from 16 public institutions in the Amhara Regional State. Topics covered during the workshop included an introduction to SWAT+gwflow, model setup and calibration, and drought analysis using model outputs. Participants, who represented various governmental institutions, engaged in hands-on exercises with direct applications to the Upper Blue Nile basin. The workshop provided them with practical experience in state-of-the-art, open-source model development, preparing them to apply these techniques to other watersheds in future water management projects.
