BiT-BDU Hosts 6th ICT for Development in Africa (ICT4DA-2024) Conference

Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University (BiT-BDU), has commenced 6th International Conference on ICT for Development for Africa (ICT4DA-2024). The conference aims to brings together researchers, engineers, developers, and industry practitioners to explore the role of digital innovation in driving sustainable and inclusive economic growth across the African continent.
Dr. Mengesha Ayene, President of BDU, in his opening remarks, emphasized the significance of the ICT4DA conference for Ethiopia's development and that of the African continent. He highlighted BiT-BDU's ABET accreditation for its engineering programs, noting that it enhances the global credibility of BiT's curricula and equips graduates with the skills needed to compete internationally. He also stated that conferences like ICT4DA are crucial for addressing Africa's challenges and supporting its development. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of such events in helping Ethiopia and Africa remain competitive in a digital future.
Dr. Mitiku Damitie, Acting Scientific Director of BiT, welcomed participants and emphasized the conference's key role in fostering collaboration and innovation to address Africa's critical challenges through ICT. He noted that the ICT4DA conference has become a major platform for showcasing innovations and facilitating discussions on how digital technologies can tackle regional issues. He also highlighted that between 2019 and 2023, over 220 research papers affiliated with BiT were published in Scopus-indexed journals, reinforcing the institute's reputation as a leading center for impactful research and knowledge exchange.
Dr. Esubalew Alemneh, Conference General Chair, provided an outline of the conference program, explaining it as a platform for collaboration among researchers, ICT professionals, and both government and non-governmental organizations. He also highlighted the success of the previous five ICT4DA conferences held over the past seven years, with 159 conference and workshop papers published at the event.
The conference featured by keynote speeches: Innovation in Electronic System Design by Prof. Sven Mattisson of Lund University, Sweden, and Multilingual Automatic Speech Recognition for a Multilingual Country by Dr. Martha Yifiru, focusing on the development of speech recognition technology for Africa’s linguistic diversity.
ICT4DA-2024 is technically sponsored by IEEE Region 8 and the IEEE African Council, with proceedings to be published in IEEE Xplore. Distinguished speakers from Europe and Africa are contributing to discussions on cutting-edge ICT topics under the theme Digital Innovation for Sustainable and Inclusive Economic Growth.
