An applicant for the admission to a Ph.D. program must have a bachelor‘s degree and a Master ‘s degree (with project/thesis) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and related fields from recognized universities with minimum CGPA as per BDU legislations. The applicants from other fields need to take bridge courses to fulfill the prerequisites of the program and may need more time to complete the Ph.D. program. Such admissions are solely decided by the FGC of the Computing Faculty. Ph.D. by Research candidates should demonstrate academic excellence with two publications (one peer-reviewed journal indexed by Scopus or web science or Thomson Reuters, and one indexed international conference) including having the ability to independently pursue the research of interest in a scientific manner.
Admission to the program is granted on a competitive basis, based on rank order. Therefore, all candidates intending to pursue Ph.D.are required to take the Ph.D.qualifying examination and an interview. TheFaculty Graduate Committee (FGC) will conduct the evaluation as well as the interview.
-->Applicants with M.Sc. degree in relevant areas preferably in Computer science, Information Technology, Information Science, Software Engineering, electrical and computer engineering, telecom engineering, and related fields Systems from accredited/recognized universities and with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 and above can apply directly into a Ph.D. program.
-->Admission may be considered on the basis of the soundness of applicant’s Ph.D.draft proposal (5 to 10 pages specifying which issues are being considered, the scientific approach, theory, methodology) of his/her Ph.D.
-->Candidates are expected to submit: two recommendation letters and a statement of interest.
-->A letter which shows the candidate's acceptance for the homegrown scholarship program.
-->A candidate can apply for admission in the Ph.D. in Computer Science upon the notification from the Faculty of computing, Bahir Dar Institute of Technology.
-->Candidates must also meet the general application and graduate admission policy of BDU and BiT.
In addition, the general Admission Provisions are:
-->A candidate who has a high scholastic standing, whose professional experience has been superior and who has received good recommendations shall be given priority for admission. In spite of this, priorities in admission may be granted to students with sponsors.
-->Admission to regular Ph.D. programs is processed by the registrar and granted by the respective faculties based on the requirements.
-->Given the availability of space and availability of supervisor(s), admission to a Ph.D. program shall be on a competitive basis in line with the admission requirements of the specific curriculum.
-->Admission for students depends on the number of applicants and available resources in BiT.
-->The specific Ph.D. program and/or Faculty may, from time to time, include additional admission requirements in conformity with BiT or BDU rules and regulations.
-->Admission is processed for programs with the approved curriculum by the BiT Senate.
-->Application for admission shall be done when the announcement for application is made by respective faculties or BiT and/or when applicants are sent through the Ministry of Education.
-->Faculties may also set appropriate work experience requirements after obtaining the master’s degree subject to the approval of the senate.
-->The student must produce a sponsorship letter from their sponsoring organization(s) or deposit, in cash, tuition fee for the semester they are applying prior to registration.

Publications
A PhD graduate is expected to publish two articles in peer reviewed journals from the result of the thesis work. However, no PhD candidate shall graduate without publishing at least one article in peer reviewed journal and one international conference with dissertation. Institute should work to fulfil the required support and facility requirements for publication. These papers must be published in journals listed in the Science Citation Index (SCI) and/or Science Citation Index Extended (SCI/E) to avoid publishing in predatory journals.
Supervision
Although close supervision of the performance of the graduate student is the responsibility of the supervisor (can be Associate Professors and above) and co-supervisor (can be Assistant Professors), the SDAC committee members may involve in any technical support and guidance of the PhD student. With the proposal of the PhD student and with the consent of the supervisor, the FGC shall appoint; with approval of SRGS; a co-supervisor with Assistant Professor to be a member of SDAC of the PhD student.
