Background
Faculty of Computing is any goal-oriented activity requiring, benefiting from, or creating computing machinery. It includes the study and experimentation of algorithmic processes and development of both hardware and software. It has scientific, engineering, mathematical, technological and social aspects. It has dramatically influenced progress in science, engineering, business, and many other areas of human endeavor. In today’s world, nearly everyone needs to use computers, and many will want to study computing in some form. Computing will continue to present challenging career opportunities, and those who work in computing will have a crucial role in shaping the future (ACM, AIS & IEEE, 2005).
Computing as discipline has emerged recently after development of the computer technology in late 1980’s. The main computing programs that we have now were incubated with other non-computing programs. For instance, Computer Science was born from Mathematics inheriting its algorismic nature, Information Systems was born from Library Science and Business, Computer Engineering was born from Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Information Technology was born from Electronics. by the time when PBR was implemented. Computer Science department was established in 2004 G.C. by providing a three years advanced diploma in ICT and a three years BSC degree in Computer Science. In the same manner, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) program was launched by Computer Science Department (CSD) in 2000 E.C. On the other hand, Information Technology was being provided by Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE). By observing the demand of communities and industries, FBE and CSD designed curriculum for Information Systems (IS) separately. However, before the inauguration of this new program, a new research-based direction was passed by Ministry of Education (MoE). Hence, by following the direction of MoE, Bahir Dar University, decided to put all computing programs under one unit. According to the research-based direction of MoE, computing has to include Information Technology (IT), Computer Engineering (CE), Software Engineering (SE), Information Systems (IS), and Computer Science (CS). In the same year, that is 2001 E.C, the university was applying Business Process ReEngineering (BPR) and established School of Computing and Electrical Engineering having the four existing computing programs (IS, IT, CS and CSE) and Electrical Engineering. however, 2007E.C onwards , computing has been stand alone as a faculty by providing IT, IS, CS and SE at under graduate level, IT,CS, SE, and Artificial Intelligence at graduate level.
Currently, we have 132 staff members among which 2 associate professors, 16 assistant professors, 69 lecturers, 11 assistant lecturers, 3 graduate assistants, and 31 technical staff. Many of our staff members are young and engaged in different activities like developing different enterprise solutions, training, research activities, involved in community engagements, and teaching.
Currently, the faculty has the following programs in undergraduate and graduate programs.

Student Admission
Admissions and placements to all regular undergraduate programs are processed through the ministry until such time as the university will be allowed to enroll its students. It may also be granted to students completing their secondary education in foreign countries on the basis of equivalent academic achievements that shall be determined by the ministry. Admissions to all undergraduate continuing and distance education programs is processed through the various faculties, in consultation with the institute registrar, by considering criteria to be developed by the Academic Standards and Review Committee. The criteria shall be developed based on the framework from ministry and/or HERQA.
