Profile of the Program:
Bahir Dar University STEM Center is offering STEM Camp program for talented girl students from grade nine to twelve. The program is designed for students who will be entering their senior high school and who have an interest in enriching their science and mathematics education. The aim of the camp is to make it a real fun and pressure-free place. It is not merely a 'STEM teaching' session, but a training program that includes computer programming, computer graphics, physical exercises, socialize and leadership development, science experiments, engineering design and project works, and field visits.
The camp program allows students to experience science as never before- through games, projects, experiments, and other fun activities. The camp takes place in the main campus of Bahir Dar University and stays for two weeks, held at the end of January and June. Each year, a total of 65 female students, 12 teachers selected from 12 private and governmental schools in Bahir Dar city and 4 graduating class female students in Bahir Dar University participate in the camp. 15 university instructors from science college and Bahir Dar institute of technology participate in designing and conducting lessons and following up of projects.
The camp includes six 1 and 1/2 hours sessions and the evening game activities every day. All activates are performed based on group competitions. During the registration time, all the participant students and teachers are grouped in to four houses wearing green, blue, yellow and red color T-shirts, and the groups (houses) are named by known female scientists in the world, or only in Africa or only in Ethiopia. Every evening the tokens they collected the whole day is counted and their progress is displayed through scientist’s photo poster. At the end of the program the winner house is awarded a cup.
The objective of Girls STEM Camp Program is to:
• Enable gifted students to pursue knowledge in a subject they enjoy, in an environment that encourages and fosters such pursuits. Selected participants will gain knowledge and skills, emphasizing problem solving. The camp will afford participants a chance to meet and make friends with fellow STEM Camp students, who enjoy and value the pursuit of higher learning.
• Allow students to experience science, technology, programming, engineering and mathematics as never before- through games, projects, experiments, and other fun activities.
• Arouse the curiosity of students and encourage a deep personal involvement with the creative elements of STEM subjects due to the camps' problem-solving sessions and contests. At the same time, the camp can also foster interaction between campers and the larger community of mathematicians and scientists working in Bahir Dar University.
• Allows school teachers to experience new teaching- learning skills with regard to interactive game based teaching and fun way of learning.
• Allows school teachers to share experience with other school teachers, university instructors and international scholars.
• Help young mathematicians and scientists delve into their love of math, science, coding and related pursuits. It may also help students who may require tutoring help.
• Provide students with an interest in STEM with a unique and unforgettable experience. Students who attend the camps leave with new friends, new ideas, and a new outlook on STEM subjects. Provide a friendly social environment for friendly interaction between participants, camp instructors and students.
• Provide access to advanced topics in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and computer in a way that is both fun and appealing.
