Conference on Cotton Textile and Apparel value chain commences

Ethiopian Institute of Textile and Fashion Technology, Bahir Dar University launched its 8th International Conference on “Cotton, Textile and Apparel Value Chain in Africa” on 7th May 2019.

On the occasion, several individuals and stakeholders in the sector from different textile and garment factories, academic institutes and government offices have participated. In his opening speech, Dr. Firew Tegegne, President of BDU underlined that the existence of the big textile and fashion technology institute in BDU and the great potential of the region for producing adequate raw material input for the textile industry are good opportunities for the development of the sector. This, the president said, will in turn contribute to the economic growth of the region and the country at large.

State Minister of Trade and Industry Mr Teka G/yesus and the Amhara National and Regional State Technical Vocational and Enterprise Development Bureau head and an advisory Board chairperson of EiTEX and BiT Mr. Yeshambel Kebede all have also addressed their messages to the participants. On the opening event, EiTEX Scientific Director Dr. Abera Kechi seized the moment to introduce an establishment of the Ethiopian Journal of Textile and Apparel. It was officially inaugurated by Dr. Firew Tegegne, President of BDU.  As part of the conference undertaking, participants continued to visit an exhibition in Selam campus organized by EiTEX students and invited participants.

Professor Mamo Muche from Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa (currently an adjunct professor in BDU) introduced some internationally reputable journals and cordially invited researchers of BDU to publish their work in the journals.

The conference will continue for two days. In those days, 29 papers are expected to be presented by different researchers.  The event also includes a fashion show, which is an icon to EiTEX, BDU, to be held in the evening of 8th May, 2019.
