Department of Psychiatry Conducted a Public Seminar for the Monthly Academic day

The Department of Psychiatry has been delivering scientific presentations in a monthly manner since November 2018. The sixth presentation was a public seminar on “Endorsed Stigma towards people with mental illness”. Mr Endaylalu Defere, a Clinical psychologist, was the speaker on the selected title, on 4th April, 2019.

He discussed the magnitude of the problem along with the contributing factors. He also stressed that sources of stigma are labeling, psychiatric sign and symptoms, social skill deficit and physical appearance.

The audience which comprised of staff, graduate students and undergraduate students, further discussed on the situation in the local area, and almost all agreed that it is more common. The main contributing factor is accounted to low level of mental health literacy in the community.

Senior staff presented the experiences their clients actually faced after diagnosed for a mental illness. According to the discussion, activities targeted at creating awareness on mental health provided to religious fathers, community leaders, media personnel, health extension workers and others are the key to decrease the level of stigma in the society.

At last, the audience take the home message of doing more and more to advocate mental health so that internalized and experienced stigma can be minimized.
