College of Medicine and Health Sciences organized first-of-its-kind international Bahir Dar Outreach Neurology Education (BORNE) Symposium in collaboration with University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, USA from July 16-17, 2019. The symposium was attended by over 283 Health professionals from Academic institutions and Hospitals in Ethiopia, and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
Areas addressed at BORNE Symposium were:
In order to strengthen the collaboration between the two institutions, University level MoU is to be signed. The focus areas for short-and mid-term collaborations are:
1. Establishment of Stroke Unit at Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital (TGSH)
2. Staff capacity development in area of stroke, epilepsy, neuromuscular diseases and movement disorders.
3. Provision of skill-based specialized training to nurses and specialists.
4. Curricula development for neurology residency and joint fellowship programs
5. Initiation of autism screening service @ TGSH.
6. Collaborative research on autism and other areas of mutual interest.
7. Awareness creation initiative on neurological diseases and disorders.
8. Student/fellow/staff exchange programs.
9. Strengthening the physical rehabilitation and emergency service at TGSH
10. Initiation of regular neurological outreach programs in Amhara region
11. Telemedicine service
Following the successful conclusion of the international neurological symposium, the two institutions have proudly agreed to organize and host the 1st Sub-Saharan Africa Stroke Conference at Bahir Dar University in July 2020.
